Test Firing

Test firing any gun being worked on is a given; otherwise how will you know it works ? Or is accurate?
Actually during the building of a custom rifle it will go through several series of range sessions, for different reasons.
As soon as the barrel is installed and chambered, it needs to be proof fired. This is to make sure that the chamber is fine and that the gun is safe. Firing 10 or 15 rounds will assure that all is well and work can proceed. A this stage we will look at the brass for unusual marks, dings or imperfections in the chamber polishing. Also inspected for will be signs of high preasure.
Another time for test firing will be once the metal has been inletted into the stock, and is functional with the trigger and bolt stop in place. This test firing will help to seat and set the wood molecules under recoil. This is kind of like a first introduction of the wood and metal under full recoil. On some occasions sight and or scope regulation will occur at this time as well. We don’t want to proceed any farther with work unless the gun will shoot were the sights are pointing. feeding and functioning have been adjusted in the shop using dummy rounds; at this time we are feeding live rounds through the magazine to assure that feeding and ejection are proper. This is like a dress rehersal for the gun before we proceed with the wood and metal finishing.
There is always a final range session with the rifle completed and assembled for the last time. This trip is to prove the accuracy, feeding, function and safety.
