Inletting octagonal barrels
- 29 September 2011 by DaveNorin 0 Comments
Here is a tip on inletting an octagonal barrel from a square blank. We know we want the top line of the forend to be on the same plane as the bore line. So we mill the bottom flat to the correct depth which is of course one half the flat to flat dimension of the barrel. Then come up half that distance and mill the barrel channel width just shy of the total flat to flat dimension, which allows some fudge factor room for final hand inletting. Then by using a very sharp dog legged chisel it is easy to cut out the ‘step’ between the bottom and side flats. This will get you to the point of final hand inletting for a perfect fit accuratly and quickly.
