A stockmaking tip

One of the most useful tools for me during the final stages of stock shaping is the very simple scraper ; these are sometimes also called a ‘card’ scraper. These can be purchased through any good wood working tools company. They are very simply a thin piece of very hard steel and a sharp edge is applied to the edge of the tool. During the initial shaping of the stock we use chisels and gouges , rasps and files all of which leave heavy tool marks imbedded in the wood. The card scraper is capable of removing several thousanths of an inch at a time in long overlapping strokes which are perfect for removing the tool marks left by the coarser tools. It is the scraper which prepares the wood for sanding. In the photo you can see the amount of wood being shaved away quickly and accuratly.
